The earliest record of the concept of ‘welfare management’ appeared in the 18th Century when Robert Owen (social reformer) and Charles Babbage (philosopher, inventor and mechanical engineer) concluded that people were crucial to the success of an organisation and that improving their wellbeing, resulted in better work.
Whilst HR practices were formally established approximately a century later, when The CIPD started life in 1913 as the Welfare Workers’ Association (WWA),  they have of course significantly evolved since then. However, the original sentiment remains true and for that reason, it’s fair to say that HR has probably been challenged more than ever during the last 2 years as a result of the pandemic.
